Live shooting is the key! Crytek on the visual difference between Far Cry and Crysis

This year is the time of “Island crisis” developer Crytek 25th anniversary, they specially produced a series of videos to introduce some of their insider stories and experiences when making games. In the first season of the series, Crytek introduced Crysis with the long becomeUbisoftThe visual difference between the well-known IP Far Cry.

Crytek says the most critical difference between Far Cry and Far Cry has nothing to do with pure technical prowess. “The biggest difference between Far Cry and Far Cry is that Far Cry is a game with great graphics, don’t get me wrong. It’s technically absolutely stunning – in Far Cry, the fine arts department creates natural environments based on their imagination. They built the jungle with their brains,” explains Marcel Schaika, artistic director of Crysis. “And in Crysis, we imitate nature as much as possible. I think that makes a huge difference. ”

A crucial moment in the development of Crysis was when the team traveled to Haiti, planning to collect as much reference data as possible for its island rainforests. “If you want to build a real place, the best thing to do is to go to the place to capture impressions and bring them back,” says Crysis senior
3D artist Tom Deerberg said.

Schaika says it’s this shift in approach to environmental design that makes Far Crysing’s tropical paradise more convincing than the one in Far Cry. “Although there are few technical differences in some areas, the way we construct the environment, the way we use technology, such as really trying to mimic the behavior of nature, like the way sunlight penetrates leaves, the ocean, the refraction of water, etc., are all artists and engineers working closely together to create virtual environments that are exactly the same as the references we get. This mindset is what makes Crysis so prominent in comparison.
