atMicrosoftWeeks after insiders claimed the company had to choose between “cutting AI investments” and “laying off employees,” CEO Satya Nadella appeared to defend Microsoft’s decision through an internal memo.
According to a blog posted on Microsoft’s official website, Nadella reassured employees who are still employed, even though about 9,000 employees have been laid off this month — including thousandsXboxRelevant people – but “Microsoft is still thriving”.
“We are investing more in capital expenditures than ever before,” he wrote. “Our total number of employees remains largely the same, and some of the talent and expertise within Microsoft and across the industry are being recognized and rewarded in unprecedented ways.” His remarks echoed what Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer said to laid-off employees: “Our platform, hardware and gaming roadmap has never been stronger. ”
“At the same time, however, we did make layoffs,” Nadella admitted. He called this contradiction the “paradox of success” and argued that it is a problem that must be faced on the way to Microsoft’s “true love” – artificial intelligence.
Nadella wrote hopefully: “Imagine if each of the world’s 8 billion people could summon a researcher, analyst or coding assistant to not only access information, but also use their expertise to do what really benefits them.” ”
